Joseph E. Heckel, Jr., 92, of Gibsonia (formly Bloomfield), passed away June 24, 2018 at West Penn Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Ben Avon, he was the son of the late Joseph E. and Elizabeth (MacDougall) Heckel. He was the beloved husband of 67 years of Joan (Goodwin) Heckel, and father of Dr. David G. Heckel of Jena, Germany; Sarah G. Lavoie (Marc) of Orlando; Rebekah G. Criss of New Castle; and Martha H. Crummy (Bill) of Gibsonia. Five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive him. After graduating from Avonworth High School in 1943, Mr. Heckel joined the U.S. Navy and served on a destroyer in WWII.
