Obituary for David C. Scapes

Age 79, of McCandless Twp., on July 4, 2018 at UPMC Passavant Hospital, following complications from a stroke. Born June 12, 1939, the son of the late Carmel and Katherine Scapes, he is survived by his wife of 49 years Elva (Hohmann) Scapes. Dave and Elva enjoyed a special bond in their love and support of the Pittsburgh Opera, dancing to Cajun music and their travels to the Southwest, especially New Mexico.

Following graduation from Shaler High School in 1957, Dave obtained a degree in Business Administration in 1961, from the University of Pittsburgh. Dave joined the Army Reserves where he served in a medical support unit, then accepted a position at Haskins and Sells and went on to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). At Haskins and Sells he audited many major corporations including serving as Audit Supervisor of PPG Industries.

A sports enthusiast and avid softball player, Dave was instrumental in organizing and forming the first softball league of Big 8 Accounting firms in Pittsburgh. Dave went on to join the Vocational Rehabilitation Center (VRC), later Life's Work of Western PA, where he was Vice President and Treasurer, before retiring in 2006 after 40 years of service. In addition to his softball prowess, Dave was also a devoted golfer, and was an especially passionate PITT fan and booster. Some would say that Dave bled Blue and Gold, since he was an ardent PIT fan, attending every home football game for more than 60 years, and a devoted PITT basketball fan where he was a season ticket holder for many years. He especially enjoyed his annual visits to NY with his wife to attend the Big East Tournament, and take in Broadway shows. Dave was well known among the PITT administration and alumni community and was a regular attendee at all things PITT.

In addition to his wife, Dave is survived by brother-in-law Charles Hohmann Jr., Wexford; two sister-in-law, Jeanne (Hohmann) Gounaris, Ross Twp.; and Rose (Hohmann) Nelson and husband Donald both of Freedom. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, Karen (Rick) Kaiser, Bradford Woods; Jennifer (Keith) Christy, McCandless; Lisa (Brad) Ramirez, Denver CO; Brian (Lisa) Hohmann, McCandless; Kimberly Nelson, Arlington VA; Melissa (Sean) Bahoshy, Denver CO; several cousins; and many close friends, especially his teammates from the North Allegheny County Senior Softball League; his regular golfer buddies called "Geezers Gone Wild", and his close friends supporting causes in his community.

David's cheerful personality, quick wit and zest for life will be missed by all who knew him. A celebration of Dave's life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Dave's name to either Life's Word of Western PA, 1323 Forbes Ave., Pgh., PA 15219 or to PITT at "University of Pittsburgh Immediate Impact Athletic Scholarship Fund", 128 Craig St., Pgh., PA 15260.
